May is Better Local Business month and the Malanda Chamber of Commerce is hosting a networking event from 6:30pm on Thursday 22nd May at the Top Rail.
This year we are focussing our event on the housing industry. Finding a secure “Place to Belong” is a challenge for many as rents, cost of home purchase and lack of availability of housing adversely affect our community.
Since Covid times there has been an exodus of persons moving to our region. Reasons are many and varied, from improved lifestyle in a rural community, great schools, less crime, better climate and less risk of severe weather events and flooding.
There are no vacancies in the rental market, and if there is a vacancy the rental rates are not affordable. New builds are slowly progressing, but there is very little social housing coming online. Homeless people living in cars is more and more evident.
We have a range of guest speakers presenting at this event, including representatives from the housing industry, real estate agencies, local council, the Lions Club (who are involved in building affordable housing), and community workers engaged in the housing sector.
