Active vs Passive Listening

14 April 2025 Leave a Comment

In today’s world, we are inundated with information, often causing us to hear rather than truly listen. This subject emphasises communication and encourages you to explore active listening as a fundamental skill for the course. Additionally, understanding attunement in listening, which involves being prepared to listen, is crucial.
Being prepared to truly learn the art of listening as a fundamental skill is crucial.

We live in a world full of noise, both internally and externally. True listening is becoming a rarity. Hearing is passive. Listening is an active skill that fosters real engagement. With endless distractions, our ability to focus and truly connect has diminished, leading to loneliness, miscommunication, and social division.
By practicing mindful attention, asking thoughtful questions, and embracing silence, we can reclaim the power of listening. Strengthening this skill can transform relationships, workplaces, and communities.

True listening is the key to deeper connections in a world where everyone wants to be heard.

Three perspectives

In his book Recapture the Rapture, Jamie Wheal discusses a pragmatic thinking triangle comprising Occam’s Razor, Pascal’s Wager, and Bayesian Probability.

Logical thinking underpins decision-making, intellectual discourse, and problem-solving. In an era of misinformation, applying logic is more crucial than ever.

Occam’s Razor, or the principle of parsimony, suggests that the simplest explanation is usually closest to the truth.

Blaise Pascal argued that it is impossible to prove or disprove God’s existence, so one might as well act as if belief is possible due to the inherent risk involved.

Bayesian probability involves updating beliefs based on new evidence using Bayes’ Theorem. This method adjusts initial guesses (prior beliefs) with new information to form a more informed conclusion (posterior belief).
