StartUp Tablelands Proud to Be Finalists at Tablelands Regional Council Excellence Awards

1 June 2026 Leave a Comment

StartUp Tablelands were proud to attend the Tablelands Regional Council Excellence Awards Gala Dinner as finalists, joining an inspiring group of businesses, organisations and community leaders from across the region in celebrating innovation, leadership and community impact.

The organisation was recognised as a finalist for their collaborative work on the PeoplePurposePlace Ginn Road Housing Project, an innovative community-led initiative exploring new approaches to affordable, sustainable and socially connected housing on the Atherton Tablelands.

Being selected as finalists was a significant honour and recognition of the vision, dedication, and hard work of many people involved in the project. StartUp Tablelands sincerely thanks the Tablelands Regional Council for acknowledging the importance of collaborative solutions to regional housing challenges and for recognising the value of community-driven innovation.

The Ginn Road Housing Project was founded on the belief that some of the region’s most complex challenges can be addressed through partnership, shared expertise and community engagement. The collaboration between StartUp Tablelands and PeoplePurposePlace has brought together complementary skills, experience, and networks to develop practical and scalable housing solutions that place people, community and sustainability at their centre.

The gala evening itself was a wonderful celebration of the achievements and dedication that continue to shape the future of the Tablelands. While the project did not take home an award on the night, being named a finalist was an achievement in itself and a reflection of the growing support for innovative housing models that strengthen communities and improve housing accessibility.

The event was exceptionally well organised and created a warm and inspiring atmosphere that showcased the strength, innovation and community spirit of the Tablelands. It provided a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow community leaders, organisations and businesses that are all contributing to the region’s prosperity and resilience.

StartUp Tablelands and People Purpose Place remain committed to advancing affordable housing initiatives, social enterprise projects and community partnerships that create lasting positive outcomes for the Atherton Tablelands and beyond.

“We are extremely thankful to Tablelands Regional Council for the recognition and for hosting such a fantastic evening. Being named finalists was an honour and reflects the commitment of our volunteers, partners, supporters and community members who have contributed to the PeoplePurposePlace Ginn Road Housing Project. The awards highlighted the incredible innovation, passion and community spirit that exists throughout our region,” said Jenny Sader, representative of PeoplePurposePlace and StartUp Tablelands.

Startup and Innovation Tablelands has garnered many awards from local and regional awards competitions.  “Great to be back in the game,” enthused one of its longest-serving executives, Seamus Campbell.  “ST has had a renewed vigour since Christine Doan has come back to health and has renewed her active role in the organisation.  You’ll be hearing more from us again soon!”

OnNaturesEdge announcement

Hi everybody, I have some news for you, and it’s a lot of news, so I’m going to only put it out in dribs and drabs because I’m a little tired of making news.

But I want to announce that we’ve made a decision.

There is so much interest in this development approval that I have for a flat-pack Chinese house that looks nice and feels good to be in, and has 2 bedrooms.

It’s pretty small, but it’s pretty affordable.

And there’s so much interest, we have to open up a new space to do the, to do the announcements and the information and to let everybody know what we’re interested in, what you might be interested in that we’re interested in.

And we’ll do things like some Zooms out of the Facebook page, events, and this and that.

So be sure that when we’re able to announce where to go, you jump right online and find the flat-pack Chinese IKEA, whatever you want to call it, Lego house building project information.

How’s that sound?

A deal?

Talk to you over there.

More soon.

Showing the building site for flat pack house

28 April 2026 Leave a Comment

Transcription

So we started over at my house, the one I live in now, which is 12 Rifle Range Road, right on the edge of Atherton, right next to all those beautiful walking tracks.

Beautiful quiet neighborhood. I love my neighbors, they’re so cool to me.

Great place to establish our pilot project number 2, and I’m going to show you the back of that house in a minute, but this is to get the to sort of get the feeling of where you are.

Look, you can’t see my house from here. So we’re not neighbors packed up against each other and we’re making the tableland something that it’s not.

We’re doing what’s called gentle densification. And that’s what the Chinese house is partly meant for because it’s basically a granny flat. You can attach it to the back of any house.

I’ll show you in a minute how we’re going to attach it to the back of the house that sits right next door to the one I live in. So, here we are on site.

This is the proposed first site for the Chinese flat-pack house to be constructed by Doug Rolfe and his building company. Doug, as you may remember, is going to specialise in building these kinds of houses, because now that we’ve gotten through this amazingly long process of getting the development approved, and that requires all kinds of things, because this is a cyclone-rated Lego house.

Well, how did that happen? Hard work, let me tell you, and it took forever.

But here’s the site where we proposed to build the first one of those. It’s close to the road, it’s close to town, it’s easy to find ways of having people invited to events. To look at the whole process as the house is being built.

And we really intend to have these open houses and to invite everybody here to see how this house gets transformed into a house and a granny flat.

And eventually I’ll move into this first house and we’ll find out what all the bugs are. We’ll renovate that one too, but that’s down the road.

Let’s get this granny flat built out here, added to this, this innovation in affordable housing that comes out of a container off a ship and from those clever Chinese, and it’s going to be put together on this site by locals for locals.

Local shout-out announcement

Transcript

Hi everybody, we’re just about to do a series of fortnightly shoutouts to local businesses, and I just want to let you know that that’s what we’re aiming at.

And if your business has done— it had anything to do with the Gin Road project or with the upcoming projects in Atherton, you let us know that you want to be part of this.

Shout out to local businesses because we think that the way that we can encourage the whole economy to move forward is to collaborate and to shout out for each other.

So that’s what we’ll be doing, and I hope you enjoy what we’ve got planned for you.

Flat pack update – off the production line

Transcript

Hi again. The, uh, some big news. But first, let me just say, you know, some things take forever to get started, and they take forever to get all the preparation, and then all of a sudden everything happens.

And it seems as though that’s what’s happening with Pilot Project 2, Pilot Project 3, with the Chinese flat pack Lego IKEA house. Don’t lose the Allen key.

So I hardly know what to announce at this point without making this a half-hour video that nobody wants to watch. Our Chinese flat-pack house has come off the production line.

Very soon, we’ll have news about it getting on the boat. That means in 3 months it will turn up in Townsville.

How about that? Now, a lot of you have wondered, where is this house going? Well, that is the subject of another video.

I’m going to show you the first site that we have picked out for it, which is in Atherton. Nothing to do with Melanda.

And people have asked, who’s going to be in that first house? Guess who? Moi. I’m going to move into it and find out everything that’s wrong with it, and then I’m moving out again so that it can be rented.

But first, we have to make sure that this thing actually functions the way they say it functions and find out all the soft spots in construction, in getting it from the ordering point through the oceans, not through the Strait of Hormuz, thank heavens, but to here, and then all the failings in the first bit of technological, how do we put this puzzle together?

And then what’s it like to live in?

What’s missing?

What works and what doesn’t work?

I’m going to be the first victim.

And the first house is going to be built right here in Atherton, not in Malanda, not anywhere else, and there won’t be anybody moving into it. That’s the plan today, except me and of course my doggie,

Update on the projects

Transcript

You know, there have been lots of questions about so many aspects of our projects, and I’m going to start to pick through the questions.

But get on Facebook, ask more questions, we’ll answer the questions on these videos, and then you’ll start to have a bigger, better, clearer understanding of how all these different entities fit together, what the plan is for Pilot Project 1, almost finished in Milanda.

Pilot Project 2, just about to be built. That’s my house over there. Next door, I also own number 8 on Rifle Range Road, and that’s where we plan to build our very first flat-pack house.

Let’s see whether it actually works out that way or not, but that’s where we’re going now, is to look at the site where we think this first, very first, Tablelands Chinese flat pack cyclone-rated, cheap, nice-looking house is going to be built.

We’ll see if it all works out that way, but that’s the plan. More soon.

Community building

6 April 2026 Leave a Comment

Description

After a long period of serious illness, the media queen is back – and this time with a quieter, more reflective tone.

In this video, we take a step back from the hype and talk honestly about community building: what it really looks like, where it starts, and what’s happening on the ground at Gin Road. No motivational speaker energy here – just a genuine conversation about what’s working and why it matters.

If you’re interested in collaborative living, intentional community, or simply building something real with the people around you, this one’s for you.

Topics covered:

  • Returning to health and what changes with it
  • Why community building calls for a quieter approach
  • Early signs of success at Gin Road

Transcript

Hi all, I have a little different topic today. I want to talk more about community and community building, and where that starts and where I might be able to contribute.

But you know what? I was ill for so long, and so desperately ill. And it’s so wonderful to be going up in my health again. And it’s been so interesting to see that the media queen came back.

But when you’re talking about community building, it isn’t really appropriate to be “yay rah” like some kind of American motivational speaker. It requires a quieter tone. I wonder if I can manage that, because I really want to talk about the community at Gin Road. I think it’s becoming a great success already.

But I need a little bit of quiet time to talk to you.

Malanda, how’s the honeymoon?

30 March 2026 Leave a Comment

2026 03 30  Media Release

Malanda gains an unusual new home.

A bold vision for a new kind of living has come to life on the Atherton Tablelands, as the first residents settle into the collaborative housing project at 42 Ginn Road.

What began as an idea—part practicality, part idealism—has evolved into something more tangible: a functioning, connected community. The new residents, already calling themselves The Ginn Road Mob, bring together a diverse mix of personalities, backgrounds, and life experiences. Each individual arrives with their own goals, strengths, and challenges, yet together they are forming something greater than the sum of their parts.

“They may still be in a bit of a honeymoon phase,” says project lead and property owner Christine Doan, “but what we’re seeing is extraordinary. There’s a genuine sense of connection, mutual respect, and willingness to engage. It already feels like a team.”

The initiative was inspired by a concept from Townsville’s Darren Finlay, who envisioned “homeholds” rather than just houses—spaces that balance privacy with meaningful social connection.

“My vision was to create affordable households combining privacy and sociability,” says Finlay. “A better word is ‘homeholds’. Houses are everywhere, but true homes are becoming rare. We need to return to building places where people can genuinely live well together, using the best of what we know today.”

Early signs suggest the idea is working. Initial meetings among residents have combined practical organisation with open, honest communication—ranging from day-to-day logistics to shared hopes and aspirations.

“GRM is already a team,” says Doan. “Conversations have covered everything—from the nitty-gritty of living together in a new space to solving challenges constructively, to expressing optimism and making concrete plans for a shared future.”

The PeoplePurposePlace credo is that the development of the whole person has to be the basis of improving our housing situation.  Good design and affordable rent is only the start of the its ‘homing’ solutions.   Its primary purpose is to offer residents tools and guidance in communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution—key elements in sustaining a healthy collective ‘homehold’ over time.

For Jana Mueller, a PeoplePurposePlace ambassador and member of the support team, the project represents something deeply meaningful.

“The gratitude I feel is hard to put into words,” says Mueller. “To see such a diverse group of people come together with a shared intention to live collaboratively—not just in theory, but in the day-to-day reality of life—is incredibly powerful. This is about more than housing. It’s about rediscovering what it means to belong.”

As the Ginn Road Mob settles in, the project stands as a living example of what can happen when thoughtful design, careful selection, and a shared purpose come together.

From concept to community, Ginn Road is no longer just a place—it’s becoming a way of living.
